The theme underlying the dance-film IN WHITEST SOLITUDE (based on a forgotten poem by R. M. Rilke) is the irreversible nature of time. The two creators, both refugees from war-torn Yugoslavia, decided to fill the gap left by their loss of faith in the worth of words and explanations with images, music and dance.
All that exists before and after language is movement, not abstract or metaphysical, but concrete physical movement. A language in its own right, though not an entirely independent one, movement is an instinct which starts with a stimulus, a sensation, and eventually leads to emotions and thoughts. Movement as a symbol of life is the heartbeat of every poem. That is why movement transformed into dance represents the deepest emotions and ideas.
The film is actually more of a visual poem utilising dance as its means of expression than a pure dance film. The atmosphere is defined by the melancholy of impermanence and our grim struggle to cling to life.
